The Gift of the Magi by O. Henry

I recently picked up the classic Christmas short story "The Gift of the Magi" by O. Henry.  If you have not read it in a long time, I highly recommend reading it again.  Although it is written in the late 1800's, it is still a wonderful story of love, sacrifice  and caring that is forever timeless.

It is the story of a sweet young couple who sacrifice their most important assets so they may get the Christmas gift they each know the other would love to have.

The story ends with this beautiful paragraph, ' The magi, as you know, were wise men, wonderfully wise men, who brought gifts to the Babe in the manger.  They invented the art of giving Christmas presents.  Being wise, the gifts were no doubt wise ones, possibly bearing the privilege of exchange in case of duplication.  And here I have lamely related to you the uneventful chronicle of two foolish children in a flat who most unwisely sacrificed for each other the greatest treasures of their house.  But in a lost word to the wise of these days let it be said that of all who give gifts these two were the wisest.  Of all who give and receive gifts, such as they are wisest. Everywhere they are wisest.  They are the magi."

My hope for each of you is that you will see the magi in all of your Christmas gift giving and receiving this year.
